Federal land surveys in Illinois were authorized by Congressional act (March 26, 1804), when the U. S. Surveyor General was given jurisdiction over all public land north of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi Rivers. The Palestine Land District Office was created by act of Congress of May 11, 1820. It assumed responsibility for part of land north of baseline for second and third principal meridians which formerly was attached to Shawneetown District.
